As with my favorite song there’s a lot of movies that I love. After much debate about my favorite it became a three-way tie between - Interview with the Vampire, Spirited Away and Phantom of the Opera. I have seen Phantom the most times out of all three movies, however Interview opened me up to the whole “vampire” scene as did Mrs. Rice’s wonderful novel that the movie is based off of. Spirited Away really introduced me to Anime (yes as a child I have watched Pokemon and Sailor Moon but Hayao Miyazaki’s film really pushed me into pursuing Anime all together.) Alas, these three movies will always be my favorites (as well as all Miyzaki’s films) for they each hold special memories and enjoyment for me.
Ah something simple. I’ve had numerous favorite songs over the years ranging from the heaviest metal one could possibly to fathom, to something as catchy as Lady Gaga’s Alejandro. To say I have one favorite song would be a horrendous lie and I am not a liar. To be honest one song that could bring me back down to Earth, help me meditate and relax is “Parabol” by Tool. Many will find this song slow, very…”chanty” however I love it. The lyrics, in a mediative state, allow me to feel a sort of “oneness” with the universe, with the Gods (GASP! She said Gods! Burn the witch!) with my self.
I have no idea if this was MJK’s attempt to create such a state, but this song…the melody, the rhythm allows me to escape my physical body and realize that “all pain is an illusion” just like MJK states in “Parabol”. That what happens in this life and also, my past lives, should not deter me from the path I am walking; that I should live a life free from fear, free from hate.
“Parabol” also reminds me what it is like to love - to share a life, moments, emotions etc. with my beloved, my boyfriend Quinton. To open fully and become “one” as not just two people in a relationship but as one conscious being; to truly love. I cannot tell you how crucial it is to feel such a thing with the person you love - to actually feel your soul and your partner’s blend together and become something so powerful that it is unmeasurable by human standards. “Parabol” does all of this for me and will remain one of my favorite songs of all time.
